Hotel Show Has Something For ALL Lodging Professionals

Dan Murphy

The 92nd annual International Hotel/Motel & Restaurant Show kicks off on Saturday, November 10, and runs through Tuesday, November 13, 2007 at New York City ’s Jacob K. Javits Convention Center. It’s the once-a-year opportunity to get your arms around the lodging industry’s best products and services.

By attending this event you will have the opportunity to personally talk to exhibitors during the Trade Show (November 11-13), touch their products and discuss pricing which will help you make informed decisions about capital improvements or ongoing supply needs. You can also check with your peers, many of whom will be at the show, regarding specific products and services. This Show is a one-stop shop for every hotelier, no matter the size of your property.

Before the Trade Show even starts, you can enhance your management skills by attending the Hospitality Leadership Forum (November 10) — a full-day conference where visionaries from the lodging industry and beyond address the issues that challenge you today and will shape the future of your business.

Also on November 10, political power couple Mary Matalin and James Carville will deliver a Keynote address. They will offer attendees an enlightening and entertaining look at today’s most important political issues, as well as a behind-the-scenes look at Washington politics. Matalin and Carville will combine their unique experiences as political insiders to provide the audience with a candid analysis of today’s hot button issues from both sides, setting the stage for a highly-charged exchange of political views.

For complete show details go to www.nyshta.org and click on the International Hotel/Motel & Restaurant Show logo. As a member benefit, all NYSH&TA members receive one complimentary registration. When registering, use promotional code NYSHTA07. You will also be prompted to provide your NYSH&TA member ID number. If you do not know your ID number, please contact Tina Bissaillon, NYSH&TA’s Membership Assistant, at 800-642-5313.

We look forward to seeing you at the Show. NYSH&TA will have a booth at the main entrance to the Trade Show floor where we can assist you with any questions you may have.

Workers’ Comp Group Sees Reduction

Contact Association to see about joining Hotel Safety Group #464

In July 2007, the Superintendent of Insurance approved a 20.5% general rate DECREASE pursuant to the filing by the New York Rating Board. This decrease includes a reduction in the NYS Assessment Charge. As a result, workers’ compensation manual rates will change on October 1, 2007. Members of NYSH&TA’s Workers’ Compensation Safety Group #464, underwritten by the State Insurance Fund, will see a reduction even larger than the average noted above. The manual rates applicable to NYSH&TA members have dropped in excess of 30%. These rates will apply to members of Safety Group #464 renewing on the next group renewal of May 1, 2008, as well as any new members joining NYSH&TA Safety Group #464 on or after October 1, 2007. The new rates are as follows:

CLASSIFICATIONS

9052 – Hotel  $3.71 per $100 of payroll

9058 - Hotel/Restaurant   $2.28 per $100 of payroll

8742 – Salespersons   $0.46 per $100 of payroll

8809 - Executive Officers   $0.37 per $100 of payroll

8810 - Clerical Employees  $0.28 per $100 of payroll

For members of NYSH&TA Safety Group #464, although the new rates will not apply until May 1, 2008, there is to be a 9.37% decrease in the manual rates applied to the current period 5/1/07-5/1/08, on the premium audit for that period.

The company that manages the Hotel Safety Group. Click logo for link to Website.

The Manual rate premiums will be modified by any applicable Experience Modification. Members of NYSH&TA Safety Group #464 who are eligible enjoy an Advance Premium Discount of 25% at present. Finally, the State Fund has advised that they will be billing only the portion of the New York State Assessment, which is not attributable to the Second-Injury Fund. Therefore, upon the May 1, 2008 group renewal, or at the inception of any new Safety Group #464 policy on or after October 1, 2007, that policy will contain a New York State Assessment charge of 6.6%, not the 15.5% Assessment Charge approved by the New York Compensation Insurance Rating Board. The Assessment charge will be applied after the advance discount.

Private insurance carriers will likely continue to bill the entire 15.5% Assessment Charge. Self-Insured Trusts, which historically have not billed the Assessment charge, will now likely offer little or no savings up-front as compared to the Safety Group #464 program. When employers consider the long dividend history of Safety Group #464 (an average dividend of over 20% for more than 50 years), in addition to the huge up-front savings, the benefits of NYSH&TA Safety Group #464 are overwhelming.

GCG Risk Management, Inc., the group manager, provides extensive health & safety services, as well as claims management and consulting services to the members of the program. Only members of NYSH&TA are eligible to participate in Safety Group #464. NYSH&TA members owe it to themselves to get a quote today. NYSH&TA Members Enjoy Fun, Sun
While Raising Money for a Good Cause

NYSH&TA hosted another successful Saratoga Summer Fundraiser at the Saratoga Race Course on July 30, 2007. All event proceeds benefit the Fred and Gertrude England Hospitality Education Foundation.

Fundraiser attendees enjoy lunch just before the start of the first race.

The event, which included VIP seating and lunch “At the Rail,” afforded hospitality industry professionals and industry suppliers an excellent opportunity to network and discuss important issues affecting New York state tourism.

Since the Foundation’s inception in 1999, deserving students and NYHS&TA member employees have been awarded scholarships, which have assisted them in continuing their education and professional development in the hospitality and tourism field. With the rising costs of college tuition and professional development classes, scholarships make a difference in the lives of the winners.

Scholarship Winners Honored

NYSH&TA Education Foundation scholarship winners Tenzing Chemey, far left,

Emily Daubney and Robert Hawk, far right, pose for photos "At the Rail."

All three scholarship winners were honored during the Summer Fundraiser.

Three students recently received academic scholarships from the New York State Hospitality & Tourism Association’s Education Foundation—The Fred and Gertrude England Hospitality Education Foundation. The students were honored during the 2007 Saratoga Summer Fundraiser. The goal of the scholarship program— money used toward college tuition— is to assist students in continuing their education in the hospitality field. The winners included:

-Tenzing Chemey, a student at the New York City School of Technology and housekeeping manager at the Millennium Hilton in New York City was awarded a $4,000 academic scholarship. Chemey, who resides in New York City, will be a senior next fall. When asked about his future plans in the hospitality industry, Chemey said, “Eventually I want to be a general manager.”

-Emily Daubney, a student at Paul Smith’s College, was awarded a $5,000 academic scholarship. Daubney will be going into her second year at Paul Smith’s and is looking to find her fit in the Hospitality industry. “My original plan was I wanted to be a general manager of a hotel,” Daubney said. “Now I’m thinking I like the idea of banquet planning and event management.”

-Robert Daniel Hawk, a student at Johnson and Wales University in Providence, R.I., was awarded a $4,000 academic scholarship. Hawk, who was an intern at the Desmond Hotel & Conference Center in Albany during the summer of 2006, is a graduate of the state’s Lodging Management Program, a curriculum that aims to teach high school juniors and seniors about the hospitality industry.

Bush Administration Cracks Down
on "No-Match" Social Security Procedures

The Bush Administration unveiled new rules that seek to increase enforcement of immigration laws. These measures contain significant changes that include mandatory procedures that employers will have to follow after receiving Social Security "no-match" letters and penalties if they fail to do so.

New rules issued by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security require employers to take certain actions upon receipt of a no-match letter. If the employer does not take these actions, or if the employee continues to work without correcting the discrepancies, the employer may be considered as having knowledge that they are employing someone not authorized to work in the United States and be subject to prosecution.

In the past, the Social Security Administration emphasized that a "no-match" letter "does not imply that you or the employee intentionally provided incorrect information. These letters do not make any statement about an employee's immigration status and are not a basis, in and of themselves, for taking any adverse action against an employee."

Specific actions required by employers will be included in all future "no-match" letters. This guidance can also be found on the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Website, http://www.ice.gov, by clicking on the " Safe Harbor for Employers Information Center " icon in the upper left corner of the page.

The final rule can also be found on the ICE Website: http://www.ice.gov/doclib/finalsafe.pdf.

A summary of the initiative can be found on the White House Website: http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2007/08/20070810.html.

For more information, contact AH&LA Senior Vice President for Governmental Affairs Shawn McBurney at (202) 289-3123 or smcburney@ahla.com.

Hotel Supplier To Guests:

Toss Toothpaste

Gilchrist & Soames, which supplies high-end toiletry products for hotels in over a dozen countries, recently initiated a worldwide recall of a toothpaste manufactured in China.

The product is Gilchrist & Soames, 0.65-ounce tube made by Ming Fai Enterprises International Co., LTD. Independent tests showed some samples of the toothpaste contained diethylene glycol, or DEG. Among DEG's uses is as a coolant in automobiles.

Kathie De Voe, president of Indianapolis-based Gilchrist & Soames, said that the company contacted its two Chinese toothpaste suppliers and initiated a series of independent lab tests in both Hong Kong and the United States after receiving an FDA alert June 1 about tainted toothpaste manufactured in China.

Hotels in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Bermuda, Barbados, Dominican Republic or Turks & Caicos as well as the United Kingdom, Ireland, Spain, Belgium, France, Italy, Germany, Switzerland and the United Arab Emirates are being asked to destroy any remaining inventory.
